San Francisco aims to enhance senior and disabled housing amid growing affordability crisis

San Francisco County is taking significant steps to address the housing needs of its aging population and individuals with disabilities, as highlighted in a recent government meeting. With seniors projected to make up nearly 19% of the population by 2030, the city is focusing on creating affordable housing solutions tailored to their unique challenges.

The meeting revealed that approximately half of the seniors in San Francisco are classified as very low income, with a staggering 70% of low-income senior renters facing severe cost burdens. This demographic is particularly vulnerable, as many seniors are homeowners, yet those who rent struggle significantly with housing costs. The city is exploring various housing types, including accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and co-housing arrangements, to provide more affordable options for seniors and individuals with disabilities.

Key initiatives discussed include the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development's (MOHCD) commitment to expanding affordable housing projects specifically for seniors. Currently, there are over 13,000 units designated for seniors and people with disabilities, with plans for nearly 900 additional units in the pipeline. The MOHCD is also enhancing programs that support home repairs and modifications to help seniors remain in their homes longer.

The Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) emphasized the growing need for housing solutions for older adults experiencing homelessness. With older adults representing one of the fastest-growing segments of the homeless population, HSH is focusing on providing permanent supportive housing and flexible rental subsidies to assist those aged 60 and older.

The meeting underscored the critical relationship between housing and public health, particularly in light of the pandemic's impact on vulnerable populations. The proposed housing policies aim to address these inequities and ensure that the needs of diverse communities are met.
