San Francisco Rec and Park begins construction on Esprit Park project amidst community concerns

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department is moving forward with the construction of Esprit Park, following a detailed community engagement process and a robust tree protection plan. During a recent government meeting, officials addressed concerns raised by community members regarding outreach and tree management related to the project.

The department clarified that they have been actively coordinating with the Bureau of Urban Forestry (BUF) to ensure compliance with tree management regulations. While some trees in the right-of-way were classified as shrubs by the appellant, the department noted that BUF considers any vegetation over ten feet tall as trees. This classification led to the decision to notify the public about the removal of certain trees, while also committing to retain healthy trees on the park's perimeter.

Officials emphasized their commitment to community involvement, stating that they have conducted multiple public meetings to gather feedback and keep residents informed. They acknowledged that the appellant felt the outreach was insufficient but highlighted their efforts to adapt based on community feedback, including a presentation to the UCSF community advisory group that was moved up from December to September at their request.

The Esprit Park project has been in planning for several years, with significant groundwork laid since 2014. The total estimated cost of the project is approximately $8 million, with $4 million allocated for construction and an additional $400,000 set aside for contingencies. As construction begins this week, the department is focused on ensuring quality control and maintaining open lines of communication with the community.
