San Francisco committee approves PG and E easement for Islais Place affordable housing

San Francisco County has taken a significant step towards enhancing affordable housing and preserving local history during its recent government meeting. The Board of Supervisors approved a resolution granting two easements on city property at 4840 Mission Street, facilitating utility connections for Islais Place, a new 137-unit affordable housing development. This project, which is nearly complete, is set to provide much-needed housing for families in the Excelsior neighborhood, marking the first affordable housing development in the area in a decade.

The easements, totaling 593 square feet, will allow Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) to install necessary electrical and gas utilities, with connections expected to be finalized by January 2024. The development is notable not only for its affordability but also for including a community health clinic and additional spaces for local services, addressing both housing and health needs in the community.

In addition to the housing initiative, the meeting also featured discussions on the landmark designation of the Colombo Market Arch, a historical structure that symbolizes the Italian American community's contributions to San Francisco's agricultural market history. The arch, originally part of a produce market established in the 1800s, has been recommended for landmark status by the Historic Preservation Commission. This designation aims to preserve the arch's historical significance and ensure its protection amid ongoing urban development.

The approval of these initiatives reflects the county's commitment to addressing housing shortages while honoring its rich cultural heritage. As the city moves forward, the successful implementation of these projects is expected to foster community growth and stability in San Francisco.
