San Francisco Public Library presents FY 23 24 budget focused on equity and digital access

San Francisco's Public Library is set to enhance its services significantly following the approval of its proposed budget for the fiscal year 2023-2024. During a recent government meeting, library officials outlined a budget that prioritizes racial equity, digital access, and community engagement, aiming to solidify the library's role as a vital resource for all residents.

The budget includes a substantial investment of $1.1 million dedicated to improving inclusivity and nearly $1 million for enhancing digital access. Specific initiatives will focus on expanding collections of works by BIPOC authors and strengthening the library's Native American collection. Additionally, $500,000 is earmarked for successful book giveaway programs, ensuring that literature remains accessible to the community.

Library officials highlighted the importance of technology in their services, proposing $200,000 for assistive technology and $95,000 for mobile hotspots on bookmobiles, which will provide high-speed internet access to patrons. The budget also allocates funds for ongoing software investments and hardware upgrades to support virtual programming, reflecting a shift in patron needs post-pandemic.

The library's funding primarily comes from the Library Preservation Fund, which constitutes about 94% of its budget. This financial backing has allowed the library to maintain operations at all 28 locations seven days a week, with plans to restore pre-pandemic hours fully by summer.

In addition to these investments, the library is committed to serving older adults through various programs, including technology assistance and inclusive programming.
