Supervisors consider Gabriela Ruiz for San Francisco Planning Commission appointment

In a spirited session at San Francisco County's city hall, community members rallied to support Gabriela Ruiz's nomination to the planning commission, highlighting her deep commitment to inclusive urban development. David Elliott Lewis, a long-time Tenderloin resident, was among the first to speak, sharing his positive experiences working with Ruiz on land use issues. He praised her holistic approach to planning, noting her ability to engage marginalized communities often left out of decision-making processes. "Gabby shows great insight into how planning works and how building design impacts neighbors," Lewis stated, urging the supervisors to consider her appointment seriously.

Eric Arguello, representing the Latino Cultural District, echoed this sentiment, describing Ruiz as grounded in community issues and well-versed in the challenges faced by BIPOC residents. "She is bright, articulate, and knowledgeable," he said, reinforcing the call for her nomination.

Zach Weisenberger from Young Community Developers also lent his voice, emphasizing Ruiz's compassion and advocacy for low-income and working-class residents. "She would bring a much-needed fresh equity lens to the commission," he asserted, highlighting her invaluable contributions to community empowerment.

The support continued with Peter Papadopoulos from the Economic Development Agency, who noted Ruiz's understanding of equitable development and housing needs. "We feel very confident that she will serve the city well," he remarked, urging the supervisors to approve her nomination.

As the public comment period concluded, President Walton acknowledged the overwhelming support for Ruiz, moving to formally approve her nomination.
