San Francisco secures $25M grant for India Basin Waterfront Park project

San Francisco County is set to receive a significant boost in community resources with the approval of a $25 million grant aimed at revitalizing the India Basin Waterfront Park. This project, presented by Toni Moran from the Recreation and Park Department, is designed to create a new 10-acre waterfront park that will serve the Southeast communities of San Francisco, addressing long-standing environmental issues and enhancing recreational opportunities.

The India Basin Waterfront Park project is structured in three phases. The first phase, which involved the remediation of the site, was completed in August 2022 at a cost of $12 million. The second phase, currently underway, focuses on park development with a budget of $54 million, all funding for which is already secured. The final phase, supported by the new grant, will renovate the India Basin Shoreline Park, with construction expected to begin in July 2024 and conclude by July 2025.

This initiative is not just about creating green space; it also includes an equitable development plan aimed at ensuring that local residents benefit from the project through job creation and economic opportunities. The park will feature modern amenities such as a cookout terrace, basketball courts, and a new playground, fostering a multi-generational space for community gatherings and activities.

The project addresses decades of environmental contamination from previous boat building and repair activities, transforming the area into a resilient and healthy shoreline. With strong community support and involvement from local nonprofit organizations, the India Basin Waterfront Park is poised to become a vital asset for residents, promoting both environmental health and community well-being.

As the project progresses, the county is actively seeking additional funding from state agencies to further enhance the park's development, ensuring that it meets the needs of the community it serves.
