San Francisco's emergency firefighting water system is set for a major overhaul, as city officials revealed plans to expand and improve the existing infrastructure during a recent government meeting. The current system, primarily located in the northeastern part of the city and built over a century ago, is inadequate for future demands, especially in the wake of a potential major earthquake.
Subhasa Mahar highlighted that the existing system can supply only 80,000 gallons per minute (GPM), while projections indicate that a catastrophic event could require up to 255,000 GPM for effective firefighting. This stark gap underscores the urgency for enhancements to the water supply network.
The proposed plan includes citywide coverage improvements, additional pipelines, and increased system capacity. Notably, the first phase of the Westside potable emergency firefighting water system project is already underway, funded by the 2020 Easter bond. However, further phases and additional pipeline installations remain unfunded, raising concerns about the timeline for comprehensive upgrades.
Officials emphasized the importance of connecting new water sources to the existing system, particularly in areas currently lacking adequate coverage. The plan also aims to ensure that the fire department's resources, including staffing and equipment, keep pace with the city's population growth.
