San Francisco County is set to allocate approximately $1,025,000 from the South of Market (SOMA) Community Stabilization Fund to support local residents and businesses affected by rapid development in the area. This decision was made during a recent government meeting, where the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD) presented a proposal to address the impacts of destabilization experienced by the community from January 2022.
Brian Chu, the Director of Community Development at MOHCD, explained that the SOMA Community Stabilization Fund was established in 2005 to provide financial support to community organizations. The fund is overseen by a community advisory committee that recommends how the funds should be distributed. Following a request for proposals issued in September, the committee reviewed 16 applications and selected 11 organizations to receive funding for various initiatives, including housing support, small business assistance, youth and family programs, and trauma-informed systems.
The committee's recommendations were approved on October 28, and the funding is expected to be utilized effectively to bolster community resilience. The resolution to authorize the expenditure of these funds received a positive recommendation from the committee and will now move to the full board for final approval.
In addition to the SOMA funding discussion, the meeting also addressed the establishment of prevailing wage rates for workers engaged in city contracts, ensuring fair compensation for various public services. This resolution aims to uphold labor standards across multiple sectors, including janitorial services, public works, and event-related services.
The decisions made during this meeting highlight San Francisco County's commitment to supporting its communities and ensuring equitable labor practices. As these initiatives move forward, they are expected to foster stability and growth in the SOMA area and beyond.
