San Francisco enhances Union Square safety with increased patrols and retail theft initiatives

The San Francisco County government meeting on July 4, 2025, focused on enhancing safety and security in Union Square, a key area for visitors and residents. Officials highlighted ongoing efforts to create a clean and safe environment, particularly during the busy holiday shopping season.

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) has increased patrols in Union Square, supported by a mobile command unit stationed in the area. A dedicated lieutenant is now assigned to oversee safety efforts, which include the Safe Shopper Initiative aimed at boosting security during peak shopping times. This initiative has involved the deployment of community ambassadors and park rangers to ensure a safe experience for shoppers and workers alike.

A significant aspect of the meeting was the discussion of a $17 million state grant aimed at combating retail theft. This funding has allowed the SFPD to conduct targeted operations against retail theft, resulting in over 300 arrests during a recent holiday season blitz. Additionally, the district attorney's office has assigned a full-time assistant district attorney and investigator to focus on prosecuting retail theft crimes.

To further enhance security, the city is installing over 400 automated license plate readers and has made improvements to parking garages in the area, including increased staff presence, new secure rolling doors, and upgraded lighting and security cameras.

The meeting also touched on the Downtown Welcome Ambassador Program, which has been operational since 2022. This program deploys trained hospitality ambassadors throughout downtown, including Union Square, to assist visitors with navigation and address any concerns they may have.
