San Francisco approves expedited settlements for Fillmore Green Streets water main break claims

A significant ordinance aimed at expediting compensation for victims of a major water main break in San Francisco was discussed at a recent government meeting. The ordinance authorizes the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and the city attorney's office to settle claims related to the September 10, 2023, incident, which caused extensive damage at the intersection of Fillmore and Green Streets.

Vice Chair Stephanie, who sponsored the ordinance, highlighted the urgency of the matter, noting that the break resulted in a substantial hole in the street and impacted numerous residents and small businesses in the area. The ordinance allows for settlements exceeding $25,000 per claim, with a cap of $1 million per claim, and an overall limit of $7 million for all claims. This streamlined process is designed to ensure that affected property owners receive compensation more quickly than the traditional approval route, which can be time-consuming.

Jeremy Spitz from the SFPUC provided further context, explaining that the break flooded streets and damaged approximately 43 properties. The ordinance not only facilitates prompt payments but also includes a requirement for biannual reports to the government audit and oversight committee, ensuring transparency in the settlement process.

This proactive approach aims to alleviate the financial burden on those affected by the water main break and underscores the city's commitment to rapid response and recovery efforts.
