San Francisco food security task force appoints community representatives for vital roles

San Francisco County is taking significant steps to bolster food security by appointing four new members to its Food Security Task Force. This initiative aims to enhance nutritional support for residents, particularly those from community-based organizations that serve diverse populations, including seniors, families, and individuals facing food insecurity.

During a recent government meeting, the Board of Supervisors discussed the importance of these appointments, emphasizing that each selected representative must come from organizations involved in various food programs, such as home delivery meals and food banks. The task force is designed to ensure that no single organization holds more than one seat, promoting a broad range of perspectives.

Among the nominees was Jade Kizon, a passionate advocate for food equity and a native San Franciscan. Kizon highlighted the pressing issue of food insecurity within the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, citing that 62% of participants at the San Francisco Marin Food Bank are Asian, many of whom are seniors. She expressed her commitment to representing these communities and addressing barriers such as language and stigma associated with food assistance.

Austin Dalmaso, another nominee, brought a public health perspective to the discussion. He emphasized the need for systemic change in food policy and the importance of viewing food as a fundamental human right. Dalmaso's work with the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) has involved engaging with diverse populations to understand their unique food needs and develop actionable policy agendas.

The Board's decision to appoint these members reflects a growing recognition of the critical role that food security plays in the overall health and well-being of San Francisco residents.
