Artists Forbes and Puccinelli complete historic Noah's Ark murals at zoo

San Francisco County is taking significant steps to preserve its cultural heritage, particularly through the restoration of historic murals at the Mother’s Building. During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing efforts to stabilize and protect these important artworks, which were created by artists Helen Forbes and Dorothy Puccinelli in the 1930s.

The murals, titled "Noah's Ark," span over 100 feet and were completed in 1936 using a technique called egg tempera. Despite initial funding challenges, the project received over $100,000 from the historic preservation fund, which helped secure the building's status as a city landmark. The Planning Commission is now close to finalizing the necessary paperwork to ensure the continued preservation of the site.

Katie Tang and Ashley Summers played a crucial role in securing an additional $200,000 to $300,000 for immediate repairs, which have stabilized the building and protected the murals from further damage. The murals are currently in excellent condition, and protective measures have been implemented to safeguard them from environmental threats.
