High School introduces new Project Lead the Way and Digital Media courses

The Northport-East Northport UFSD Board of Education meeting on November 7, 2024, spotlighted innovative course proposals aimed at enhancing student learning and career readiness. The highlight of the evening was the introduction of three new high school courses designed to provide authentic learning experiences and prepare students for future careers.

Dr. Boschnik presented a capstone course in partnership with Project Lead the Way and Rochester Institute of Technology, focusing on real-world engineering challenges. Students will engage in research, design, and testing solutions, culminating in a presentation to a panel of engineers, simulating a professional experience.

Additionally, two courses in the arts were proposed: an Industry Preparation course that simulates a digital media agency experience, and a Portfolio Preparation course aimed at helping students create professional portfolios for college and career opportunities. These courses are designed to empower students with practical skills in various media disciplines.

The board also discussed consolidating existing elective courses in social studies due to declining enrollment. This strategic move aims to create more cohesive and relevant pathways for students, ensuring that they receive a well-rounded education while addressing staffing challenges.

Board members expressed support for the proposals, emphasizing the importance of adapting to current educational needs and preparing students for the workforce. The new courses are expected to enhance the curriculum and provide students with valuable skills that align with industry demands. The board will continue to monitor enrollment trends and adjust offerings to ensure that all students have access to meaningful educational experiences.
