Isliptown NAACP opposes Brownwood mascot change to Spartans citing ethnic representation

The Brentwood Union Free School District Board of Education is facing significant backlash over its consideration of changing the school mascot to "Spartans." During a recent meeting, a representative from the Islip Town branch of the NAACP voiced strong opposition to the proposed change, emphasizing that it contradicts previous discussions aimed at moving away from racial and ethnic mascots.

The NAACP's president, Moss, had previously met with Superintendent Wanda Ortiz Rivera and Board President Eileen Felix in August 2024 to discourage the mascot change. The organization highlighted that the term "Spartans" refers to a European ethnic group and argued that no race or ethnicity should represent a municipality. The NAACP officially denounced the selection of any race or ethnic group as a mascot for the district, reinforcing their stance against the change.

In addition to the mascot discussion, a community member raised concerns about Brentwood students' participation in the Long Island Math Fair, noting that despite the area's talented students, Brentwood has not been represented in the event for over a decade. The board acknowledged the concern and promised to provide an update at the next meeting.
