Essex County declares April 2024 sexual assault awareness month to promote community safety

Essex County is taking a stand against sexual violence by declaring April 2024 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Commissioner Richardson introduced the resolution during the Essex County Board of Commissioners meeting, emphasizing the importance of raising public awareness about sexual violence and educating communities on prevention strategies.

"Over 50 percent of women, 30 percent of men, and 40 percent of transgender individuals have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact," Richardson stated, highlighting the urgent need for respectful behaviors and safe environments for all. The theme for this year's awareness month is "Building Connected Communities," which encourages collective efforts to reduce the likelihood of abuse, assault, and harassment.

Residents are invited to participate in community programs and events throughout April to support survivors and promote education on these critical issues. One notable event is the annual kite flight organized by the nonprofit Precious Little Ladies, scheduled for April 13 at Elwyn Park in East Orange. This family-friendly event aims to raise awareness about childhood sexual assault prevention.

The resolution received unanimous support from the commissioners, with Commissioner Mary Thomas expressing gratitude for the initiative, recognizing its impact on both young people and adult survivors. The declaration marks a significant step in fostering a safer and more inclusive community in Essex County.
