Commissioners approve body armor replacement plan for Sheriff's Office and Prosecutor's Office

The Essex County Board of Commissioners held a meeting on March 6, 2024, where key updates regarding public safety equipment were discussed. The primary focus was on the replacement of body armor and vests for various departments, including the corrections department, prosecutor's office, and sheriff's office.

Lieutenant Camacho provided an overview of the corrections department's equipment status, noting that over the next five years, a total of 253 vests will come out of warranty. The breakdown includes two vests in 2024, 83 in 2025, 84 in 2026, 28 in 2027, and 56 in 2028. These vests will be replaced as they reach their expiration dates.

Additionally, the prosecutor's office reported the purchase of 13 new body armor units, funded through grants and their trust. They plan to replace their equipment as it also reaches the five-year mark. The sheriff's office has ordered 140 vests over the past year, funded from their own budget, and will similarly replace them annually as they expire.

Commissioner Jackson confirmed that all departments are on track to replace their vests as they reach the five-year expiration date. The meeting concluded with a motion to approve the updates presented, moved by Vice President Cooper and seconded by Commissioner Richardson.

This meeting highlights the county's commitment to maintaining the safety and readiness of its law enforcement personnel through timely equipment upgrades.
