Pompton Lakes honors hero firefighter Zach Majeski at 200 Club Valor Award dinner

At the recent Pompton Lakes Council meeting, community spirit shone brightly as local leaders celebrated the heroic efforts of volunteer fire department captain Zachary Majeski, who received the Valor Award for his bravery during a house explosion on Ramapo Avenue. The award was presented at the Passaic County 200 Club's annual dinner, attended by over 400 people, highlighting the dedication of first responders in the area.

Mayor Michael D. Dorsey shared his experiences from the event, emphasizing the importance of recognizing those who go above and beyond in their duties. "Well done by all our volunteer firemen who risk their lives on a daily basis," he stated, reflecting on the emotional stories shared during the evening.

In addition to honoring local heroes, the meeting addressed pressing environmental concerns. Mayor Dorsey reported on a recent meeting with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regarding the operation of the local dam and reservoir. While the meeting was productive, many questions remained unanswered, prompting calls for a follow-up session to ensure Pompton Lakes' interests are prioritized. The mayor noted a suggestion from the mayor of Wayne to open the dam before storms to manage water flow, which the DEP could not immediately address.

The community also came together for a river cleanup event, where over 100 volunteers collected significant amounts of trash, showcasing the town's commitment to environmental stewardship. Mayor Dorsey expressed gratitude to all participants, including the environmental club and Councilwoman Kilberg, for their efforts in maintaining the town's natural beauty.

In a significant boost for local infrastructure, the mayor announced a $500,000 grant received from Congressman Bill Pascrell for improvements to the historic Pompton Lakes library. This funding is expected to enhance the library's facilities, further enriching the community's cultural resources.
