Utah Senate approves juvenile justice and school safety bills in committee reports

The Utah State Senate convened on February 23, 2023, to discuss several key legislative matters, primarily focusing on recommendations from various standing committees. The Judiciary, Law Enforcement, and Criminal Justice Committee presented a series of bills, including a favorable recommendation for the second substitute of House Bill 60, which addresses juvenile justice modifications. Additionally, the committee supported amendments to House Bill 61 concerning school safety requirements and House Bill 140, which outlines a standard response protocol for active threats in schools.

The Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Committee also reported favorably on House Bill 359, known as the Bridal Care Amendments. Meanwhile, the Transportation, Public Utilities, Energy, and Technology Committee recommended amendments to Senate Bill 105 regarding traffic enforcement and Senate Bill 264, which modifies car emissions requirements.

Following the committee reports, a motion was made to approve these recommendations, which passed unanimously. The bills will now be placed on the third reading calendar for further consideration.

In addition to legislative discussions, the meeting included announcements about upcoming events, including a caucus lunch and a reception for Pamela Atkins, scheduled for February 24. The Senate will reconvene at 2 PM for further proceedings.
