Batra family seeks variance for porch to enhance elderly safety at 2325 Elm Street

During the Town of Stratford Zoning Board of Appeals meeting on January 2, 2024, community members raised important concerns regarding property boundaries and proposed home improvements that could enhance safety for elderly residents.

One resident, Greg Ricco of 40 Putatuck Path, sought clarification about a recent property survey. He expressed uncertainty over whether the survey pins accurately represented the boundaries of his property, particularly concerning the southern, eastern, and western lines. Ricco was advised to consult directly with the surveyor for precise information, highlighting the importance of clear property demarcations for homeowners.

The meeting also featured a petition from Arminder and Ranjit Batra, who are seeking a variance to increase the allowable lot coverage from 25% to 27.7% at their home on 2325 Elm Street. The couple explained that the additional space is necessary to construct a front porch and garage overhang, which would provide a safer environment for their elderly parents. They emphasized that the porch would allow their parents to enjoy the outdoors without the risk of falling on the street.

The board unanimously agreed to close the hearing on the first petition and moved on to consider the Batra's request. This discussion reflects the ongoing efforts within the community to address safety and accessibility concerns for residents, particularly the elderly, as they navigate home improvements and property regulations.
