Town addresses rising costs of special education outplacement for local schools

The Town of Stratford Ordinance Committee held a special budget workshop on March 20, 2024, to address pressing financial challenges facing the community. The meeting focused on the town's budgetary needs, particularly in relation to educational support for students with special educational needs.

One of the primary topics discussed was the significant financial burden of outplacement for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 plans. Committee members highlighted that when local schools are unable to adequately support these students, they must be sent to external programs, which can cost the town approximately $100,000 per student annually. This figure does not include additional expenses such as transportation.

The committee emphasized the importance of investing in local programs, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which, while initially expensive, could ultimately prove to be more cost-effective than relying on outside services. The discussion underscored the need for strategic planning to enhance local educational resources and reduce reliance on costly outplacement options.

As the meeting concluded, members acknowledged the urgency of addressing these financial challenges to better support the town's educational system.
