Greenway hosts first adult-child bike ride to enhance skills and community involvement

The Town of Stratford's Greenway Complete Streets Subcommittee is gearing up for an exciting initiative aimed at fostering community engagement and promoting cycling among children. During a recent meeting on May 1, 2024, members discussed plans for the first-ever adult-children bike ride, scheduled for July 17. This event aims to teach cycling skills while encouraging families to participate together.

The subcommittee highlighted the importance of collaboration with local organizations, particularly the Rotary Club, which will assist with food preparations and logistics. Participants will ride alongside children, echoing the skills taught by local police, creating a supportive environment for learning.

However, a significant challenge remains: the lack of bicycles for children. Currently, the subcommittee noted that out of 30 expected participants, only 7 or 8 bikes are typically available. Members discussed strategies to encourage kids to bring their own bikes and explored potential partnerships with local bike shops for rentals or sponsorships.

The enthusiasm for the event was palpable, with several members expressing their commitment to attend and support the initiative. This bike ride not only aims to enhance cycling skills among youth but also aligns with the long-term goals of the Greenway project, promoting a healthier, more active community. As plans continue to develop, the subcommittee is hopeful that local businesses will step up to support this meaningful event.
