Community bike program secures reflective vests for active riders and plans marketing strategy

The Town of Stratford's Greenway Complete Streets Subcommittee is making strides toward enhancing community safety and promoting cycling activities. During their recent meeting on May 1, 2024, members discussed the distribution of reflective gear to support local bike riders. The subcommittee plans to acquire 30 to 40 reflective vests and bands, which will be given to active participants who lead bike rides. This initiative aims to ensure visibility and safety during community cycling events.

The reflective vests, similar to those worn by construction workers, will be distributed selectively to individuals who consistently lead rides. The subcommittee is considering whether to collect the vests after each ride or to allow leaders to keep them permanently. This decision will be made based on the needs of the program and the availability of vests.

In addition to safety gear, the subcommittee is working on marketing efforts to promote cycling in Stratford. They are in contact with Connecticut Rides, who previously provided marketing materials, and are looking to create efficient copies of their annual report to support these efforts. However, they noted the need for a dedicated budget line for marketing and maintenance, which will be addressed in future planning sessions.

Looking ahead, the subcommittee is optimistic about the upcoming phases of the greenway project. By this time next year, Phase 1 of the greenway is expected to be operational for six months, paving the way for improved cycling infrastructure and community engagement in Stratford.
