The Utah State Legislature convened on May 19, 2021, to discuss and pass Senate Concurrent Resolution 101, which celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This year’s observance carries heightened significance due to a troubling rise in anti-Asian hate incidents across the nation, including Utah.
Senator Iwamoto, who introduced the resolution, emphasized the diversity within the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, which includes over 56 ethnic groups and more than 100 languages. She highlighted that this demographic is the fastest-growing minority population in Utah, with significant contributions to the state’s cultural and economic landscape.
The resolution calls for all Utahns to recognize and celebrate the history and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. It also condemns acts of anti-Asian hate and encourages education and empathy to combat discrimination. Senator Escamilla and other legislators expressed solidarity with affected communities, stressing the importance of standing against hate and promoting tolerance.
The resolution passed unanimously with 27 votes in favor, reflecting a collective commitment to fostering understanding and respect among Utah’s diverse populations. It will now move to the House for further consideration. This legislative action underscores the state’s dedication to inclusivity and the recognition of the vital role that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders play in Utah's history and future.
