Utah Senate honors fallen K9 Eros for service with Highway Patrol

The Utah State Senate honored the late K9 Eros during the 11th Extraordinary Session, recognizing his dedicated service to both the U.S. Army and the Utah Highway Patrol. Eros, a dual-purpose canine trained in patrol and explosive detection, played a vital role in ensuring safety at high-profile events, including those attended by former presidents and presidential candidates.

Senator Don Ibsen shared a heartfelt tribute, recalling his first encounter with the highway patrol's canine units and expressing deep respect for their service. He highlighted Eros's impressive career, which included classified missions and daily security sweeps during legislative sessions. Eros was not only a protector but also a beloved member of the community, known for his interactions with youth and visitors at the Capitol.

The Senate issued a formal citation honoring Eros, acknowledging his invaluable contributions and the profound loss felt by his handler, Sergeant Aaron Colvin, and the entire Utah Highway Patrol community. Eros passed away on July 18, 2022, due to respiratory complications, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and loyalty. The tribute underscored the significant bond between working dogs and their handlers, emphasizing their role as both protectors and family members.
