Utah Senate passes resolution supporting Ukraine and sanctions against Russia

During the recent Utah General Legislative Session, lawmakers unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 21, a powerful statement of solidarity with Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. The resolution, introduced by Senator Kennedy, emphasizes the urgent need for action against Russia's aggression, calling for an immediate ceasefire and strong economic sanctions against the Russian government.

Senator Kennedy highlighted the importance of this resolution, stating, "Our legislature stands for freedom, and we would stand with the people of Ukraine as they fight for liberty and sovereignty." He urged all Utahns to pray for Ukraine and called for the U.S. government to halt imports of Russian oil, advocating for American energy independence to prevent funding further aggression.

The resolution received overwhelming support, passing with 28 votes in favor and none against, reinforcing Utah's commitment to international freedom and humanitarian relief efforts for those affected by the conflict.

In addition to the resolution, the session also addressed food security, with the introduction of a second substitute for Senate Bill 133. This bill aims to establish a Food Security Council at Utah State University, focusing on improving access to nutritious food grown locally. Senator Escamilla clarified that the council's work will be strictly limited to food security, distancing it from broader poverty-related issues.

As the session concluded, lawmakers expressed a strong commitment to both international solidarity and local food security, setting the stage for ongoing discussions and actions in these critical areas.
