Senator Imamoto unveils Topaz Exhibit at Utah Capitol highlighting Japanese American history

During the recent legislative session in Utah, a significant focus was placed on community engagement and historical remembrance. The session welcomed the Bountiful Youth City Council, highlighting the importance of youth involvement in governance. Senator Weiler expressed gratitude for their presence, emphasizing the tradition of supporting local universities and the legislative process.

In a notable moment, Senator Imamoto introduced an exhibit titled "Topaz Stories," which commemorates the experiences of Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II at the Topaz relocation center. This exhibit features 31 personal narratives from individuals who endured three years of confinement due to their ancestry. It will be displayed on the Third Floor Mezzanine of the Utah Capitol from January 18 through December 31, 2022.

Senator Imamoto encouraged the public to visit the exhibit, which aims to foster understanding and reflection on this chapter of history. A public event is scheduled for April 22, featuring a short Broadway production and a guided tour of the exhibit with its curator, followed by a pilgrimage to the Topaz Museum and the original incarceration site the next day.

These discussions underscore the legislature's commitment to honoring diverse histories and engaging the community, particularly the youth, in meaningful ways. As the session progresses, the focus on education and remembrance is expected to resonate throughout the legislative agenda.
