Utah Legislature honors organ donors on National Organ Donation Day

In a heartfelt tribute during the February 14 session of the Utah State Legislature, lawmakers recognized National Organ Donor Day, emphasizing the critical need for organ donors in the state. Senator Kathleen Riebe led the charge, highlighting that only 60% of Utah residents are currently registered as organ donors, despite the pressing demand for organs.

"Today is a day to honor the selfless act of organ donation," Riebe stated, underscoring the impact that a single donor can have, potentially saving up to eight lives. With over 800 Utahns waiting for organ transplants, the urgency for increased donor registration was palpable.

The official citation read during the session detailed the stark reality that approximately 108,000 people nationwide are on the organ waiting list, with 17 dying each day while waiting for a transplant. The citation also noted that organ donation can provide comfort to grieving families, knowing their loved ones are helping to save lives.

Senator Riebe encouraged all Utahns to consider registering as organ donors, a process that can be completed when obtaining or renewing a driver's license. The session concluded with a call to action for residents to embrace this "profound act of kindness" and contribute to a cause that transforms loss into hope.
