Senator Fillmore highlights Roots Charter High School's mission and inclusive approach

The 2023 General Legislative Session in Utah commenced on January 26, 2023, with a series of announcements and discussions among senators. The meeting began with Senator Buxton announcing a rules committee meeting scheduled to take place immediately after the session adjourned.

Senator Fillmore then took the floor for a personal privilege announcement. He introduced Tyler Bastian, the director and founder of Roots Charter High School, who was present in the chamber. Senator Fillmore highlighted the school's mission, which focuses on supporting students at risk of dropping out of traditional schools. He emphasized the importance of love in the school community, as represented by their motto, "We love you." Senator Fillmore expressed hope for changes in educational incentives that would benefit schools like Roots, which serve vulnerable student populations.

Following this, Senator Vickers made additional announcements, noting that it was Southern Utah University (SUU) Day at the Capitol. He then proposed a motion to recess the session until approximately 1:30 PM, explaining that the House was not in session and that reconvening would allow the Senate to address any actions taken by the House regarding the budget or other matters.

The motion to recess was put to a vote and passed unanimously, allowing senators to break until the scheduled time. The meeting concluded with a clear plan for reconvening later in the afternoon to continue legislative discussions.
