Utah Senate recognizes nonprofits' contributions to state community welfare

The Utah Senate kicked off its 2023 General Legislative Session with a heartfelt invocation and a moment of silence for the victims of the recent earthquake in Turkey. The session, held on February 9, began with a prayer led by a local pastor, emphasizing the importance of guidance for lawmakers as they work to create legislation that fosters peace and prosperity for Utah residents.

Senate President Adams acknowledged the gravity of global events while steering the focus back to the legislative agenda. The session quickly transitioned to roll call, confirming the presence of 25 senators, establishing a quorum to proceed with the day's business.

Highlighting community engagement, Senator Vickers took the floor to recognize representatives from the Utah Nonprofits Association. He praised their vital role in building resilient communities, noting that these organizations employ over 124,000 people statewide. Vickers encouraged fellow senators and attendees to visit the nonprofits in the Rotunda, emphasizing their contributions to the well-being of Utah residents.

Senator Owens also seized the opportunity to introduce members from Snow College, including interim president Stacy McKiff and student leaders. He celebrated the college's remarkable 192% increase in technical education enrollment over the past two years, showcasing the institution's commitment to workforce development.
