Utah Senate approves public art funding ahead of 2034 Olympics

Utah lawmakers have taken a significant step towards enhancing the cultural landscape of Salt Lake City in preparation for the 2034 Olympics. During a recent legislative session, a bill was approved that will allocate funds for public art installations in Downtown Salt Lake, aiming to celebrate the state's rich history and heritage through artistic expression.

The proposed legislation allows for 20% of the funds from any state building project in Salt Lake County to be set aside for art purchases. This initiative will create a dedicated account managed by the city, which will grow over time and enable the establishment of a matching grant program. Local governments will be able to apply for these grants, provided they can match the funding, and the art must be created by Utah artists.

Additionally, the bill increases the cap on art funding in Salt Lake City by $50,000, with the provision that this measure will be repealed ten years from now, coinciding with the Olympic Games. The bill passed with overwhelming support, receiving 25 votes in favor and none against, indicating strong bipartisan backing for the initiative.
