Sister Tracy Browning offers historic prayer at Utah legislative session

The 2024 General Legislative Session in Utah commenced with a ceremonial opening that included an invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance, and musical performances. Sister Tracy Browning, the second counselor in the primary general presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, delivered the invocation, marking a historic moment as she became the first woman to offer the opening prayer in the state's legislative history.

Following the invocation, the color guard from the Utah Army National Guard and Utah Air National Guard presented the colors, while the Snow College Cadence Chamber Choir performed the national anthem. The choir's director, Dr. Michael Huff, led the students in a rendition that was well-received by attendees.

The session also featured remarks of gratitude from the presiding officer, who acknowledged the contributions of Sister Browning, the Pledge leader Neil Schultz, and the choir for their participation. The presiding officer expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Snow College students, who navigated traffic challenges to arrive on time.

In addition to the ceremonial aspects, the chief clerk announced communications from the Lieutenant Governor, Deidre M. Henderson, certifying the election of members to the House of Representatives. This formal acknowledgment marks the beginning of the legislative term for the elected officials, who will serve for two years.

The opening day set a tone of unity and gratitude, emphasizing the importance of leadership and service to the community as the legislature prepares to tackle significant issues in the upcoming session.
