Utah House passes resolutions honoring Pacific Islander cultures and promoting water efficiency

The Utah House of Representatives convened on February 20, 2024, to discuss and vote on several key resolutions during the 2024 General Legislative Session. Among the most significant outcomes were the passage of SJR 9, a resolution honoring Utah's native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities, and HJR 27, which encourages water-efficient landscaping ordinances for new construction.

SJR 9 received overwhelming support, passing with 70 votes in favor and none against. Sponsored by Senator Kwan and supported by Representative Clancy, the resolution recognizes the contributions of native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Utahns across various sectors, including service, religion, and education. Representative Clancy emphasized the importance of acknowledging the diverse cultural tapestry of Utah and the positive impact these communities have on the state.

In addition, HJR 27, which aims to promote water conservation through efficient landscaping practices, also passed with a vote of 63 to 6. Sponsored by Representative Owens, the resolution highlights that over 80 municipalities within the Great Salt Lake drainage area currently lack water-efficient ordinances for new construction. Owens noted that while the resolution does not mandate action, it encourages municipalities to consider implementing such ordinances to improve water conservation efforts.

Both resolutions will now be sent to the Senate for further consideration, marking a significant step in recognizing cultural diversity and promoting environmental sustainability in Utah.
