School Board outlines new drop-off and parking plan for middle school campus

The MSAD #51 School Board meeting on February 5, 2024, spotlighted a significant plan to enhance traffic flow and parking at the school campus. The proposed changes aim to alleviate congestion during peak drop-off and pick-up times, which have been described as chaotic.

Key to the plan is the reorientation of the school's front entrance to the north side, creating a dedicated bus loop and a separate parent drop-off area. This redesign is expected to streamline the flow of vehicles and improve safety for students and parents alike. The board discussed the addition of a secondary drop-off zone on the building side of the parking lot, which would further ease congestion.

In addition to traffic improvements, the proposal includes the installation of an underground storm drain bioswale in front of the Performing Arts Center. This would allow for the creation of 32 to 35 new parking spaces on top of the bioswale, designated for student and event parking. The overall plan is projected to add approximately 160 parking spaces to the campus, accommodating the needs of the school community as it prepares for the opening of a new pre-K facility.

The board emphasized that the staffing levels will remain stable with the transition to the new school, meaning the increased parking capacity is a proactive measure to enhance the campus experience. The proposed changes are currently included in the budget, with further discussions anticipated as the plans develop.
