Steve Blatt Associates presents $53M school campus project with renovations and expansion plans

The MSAD #51 School Board has taken a significant step forward in its educational infrastructure with the presentation of a proposed school and campus project during their meeting on May 20, 2024. The project, which aims to enhance the learning environment for students, includes the construction of a new school, renovations to existing facilities, and improvements to campus circulation and accessibility.

Architect Steve Blatt and his team outlined the project, emphasizing its importance as a culmination of over two decades of planning. The new school will be situated in the northwest quadrant of the campus, made possible by land acquisitions from neighboring properties. This strategic location is designed to facilitate better access and integration with existing school functions.

Key components of the project include the construction of a 74,500 square-foot school designed for up to 500 students, featuring dedicated zones for different grade levels, a multipurpose room, and improved safety measures for student drop-off and pick-up. Additionally, the project encompasses the relocation of the maintenance facility to a more suitable area on campus, which will help streamline operations and enhance the overall campus layout.

The budget for the entire project is set at approximately $53.5 million, which includes not only the new school but also renovations at Mabel Wilson School and the installation of a new synthetic turf field. The board anticipates that if the referendum passes, construction could begin in the summer of 2025, with an estimated completion time of 18 months.

The meeting also served as a public hearing, allowing community members to engage with the board and express their thoughts on the project. The board members were encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback, ensuring that the community's voice is heard in the planning process.
