District reports 99 percent graduation rate and strong AP IB exam performance

The MSAD #51 School Board convened on January 2, 2024, to discuss key updates regarding student performance and enrollment statistics. The meeting highlighted the district's impressive academic achievements and ongoing efforts to support student learning.

The board reported a 99 percent graduation rate for the class of 2023, with 89 percent of graduates pursuing further education at either two- or four-year colleges. Additionally, 42 percent of high school students were enrolled in at least one Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) course, with 13 percent taking three or more such courses. Notably, 67 percent of students who took AP exams scored a 3 or higher, while 85 percent of IB exam takers achieved a score of 4 or more, indicating strong performance on these assessments.

The meeting also addressed state assessment results, showing that the district exceeded state averages in math, reading, and science across all grade levels. The I Ready assessment, used to identify students needing academic interventions, indicated that 87 percent of students at Mabel I. Wilson School were at grade level in reading by the end of the last school year, an increase from previous years.

In terms of overall student performance, 73 percent of students in grades 4 and 5 met or exceeded benchmarks in reading, consistent with the previous year. Greeley Middle School reported similar results, with 74 percent of students meeting or exceeding reading benchmarks. In math, Mabel I. Wilson School saw 80 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards.

The board also discussed attendance rates, noting that 94 percent of students attended school last year, despite challenges posed by illnesses, including COVID-19. The district's average daily attendance remained high compared to other districts in Maine.

Enrollment figures showed an increase of 58 students overall, with the most significant growth at Mabel I. Wilson School, which welcomed 93 more students than two years prior. The board acknowledged the importance of maintaining student health and attendance, crediting families and school nurses for their efforts.
