Kent Woodlands redesign plan approved focusing on contemporary aesthetics and new additions

The Town of Ross has taken a significant step towards enhancing local housing with the approval of a design review for a major renovation project in Kent Woodlands. During the Advisory Design Review Group meeting on December 17, 2024, plans were presented to update the exterior of an existing home, which currently features aging T-111 siding and poorly maintained windows.

The proposed renovation aims to modernize the house while maintaining its original aesthetic. The project will add approximately 536 square feet, including two new bedrooms and a breakfast area that opens up to a nearby forest preserve. This addition is designed to enhance the living space while ensuring that the structure remains in harmony with its natural surroundings.

Key features of the renovation include a redesign of the existing decks, with a reduction in the amount of decking in the front setback and a reorientation towards the back of the property. This change not only improves the visual appeal but also addresses concerns about the proximity of the decks to existing trees. The project will also involve replacing deteriorating beams and windows, ensuring the home is both functional and visually appealing.

In response to safety concerns raised by the fire department, the driveway will be widened to allow for easier access for emergency vehicles. The use of pervious materials for the driveway is also planned, promoting better water drainage and environmental sustainability.

The meeting highlighted the importance of balancing modern updates with the preservation of the community's character. As the project moves forward, it is expected to contribute positively to the neighborhood, providing a contemporary living space while respecting the natural landscape of Ross.
