For much of the pandemic, correctional facilities faced challenges with quarantine protocols that required entire groups of offenders to restart their quarantine period whenever one individual tested positive for COVID-19. This meant that if a cohort of 30 inmates had five positive cases, the quarantine clock would reset for all 30, even if the majority had tested negative. This approach led to prolonged periods of isolation and delays in processing new inmates.
However, with the updated CDC guidance, officials have been able to implement a more efficient system. By consulting with health departments, they have managed to reduce the quarantine period to 10 days, allowing for quicker intake of new offenders. This change has not only streamlined the process but has also ensured that there have been no adverse outcomes reported from the new protocols.
Additionally, the committee discussed the use of overflow housing areas at the Ouachita River and McPherson Units. These facilities are now being utilized to accommodate inmates during their intake quarantine, freeing up designated intake beds for new arrivals.
