Arkansas legislators expand Walmart's autonomous vehicle pilot program statewide

A recent government meeting highlighted significant advancements in autonomous vehicle technology in Arkansas, particularly through a pilot program initiated in February 2019. The program, which began with Walmart operating a few autonomous trucks in Northwest Arkansas, has reported impressive results over the past two years. According to the latest data, these trucks have completed 4,376 trips, covering more than 82,000 miles without any accidents. Notably, the vehicles have averaged over 420 miles between instances requiring operator intervention, showcasing the reliability of this technology.

During the meeting, discussions centered around a new bill aimed at transitioning this pilot program into a permanent initiative. The proposed legislation would allow the Arkansas Department of Transportation (RDOT) to oversee the program statewide, with hopes of expanding its reach beyond Northwest Arkansas.
