Senator Hammer presents bill to streamline foster care re-entry process

A new bill aimed at supporting young adults aging out of foster care took center stage during the recent Judiciary Committee meeting in Arkansas. Senator Kim Hammer introduced House Bill 1736, which seeks to simplify the process for youth wishing to re-enter the foster care system after opting out.

Currently, young adults who age out of foster care can return, but the process is cumbersome. Senator Hammer highlighted that many young adults realize they need support after leaving the system, but the pathway back can be daunting. "This bill opens up that doorway for them to be able to come back in under foster care and receive the support they need," he stated.

Kristen Harper from the Division of Children and Family Services elaborated on the bill's significance. She explained that while youth can re-enter foster care, the new legislation would streamline the process. Instead of requiring a previous attorney to file a petition, young adults can now simply present their request to the Department of Human Services (DHS) either in person or in writing. This change aims to make it easier for those in need to access the support and safety of the foster care system.

The committee's discussions underscored the importance of providing a smoother transition for young adults navigating the challenges of independence. As the bill moves forward, it promises to enhance the support network for those who may find themselves in need of assistance after leaving foster care.
