Bentonville Schools partner with Accelerate Foundation to address housing crisis for staff

In a bold move to tackle the growing teacher shortage in Northwest Arkansas, the Bentonville School District is partnering with the Accelerate Foundation to develop affordable housing solutions for educators and staff. Jeff Webster, CEO of the Accelerate Foundation, highlighted the urgent need for action during a recent Education Committee meeting, citing a staggering 55.3% increase in housing costs for single-family homes since 2019.

The average home price in Bentonville has soared to $505,000, while rental costs have also surged, making it increasingly difficult for teachers and essential workers to secure housing. Webster shared that many prospective hires have had to decline job offers after facing the harsh realities of the local housing market.

To address this crisis, the district is proposing a $25 million housing project on a six-acre plot of land adjacent to Bentonville High School. The plan includes two apartment buildings and 40 cottage-style homes, specifically designated for district staff. The apartments will offer affordable rents, significantly lower than the market rate, while the cottages will feature a shared equity program aimed at helping staff transition to homeownership.

Webster emphasized that this initiative is not just about attracting teachers but also about retaining them by providing stable housing options. The project has garnered strong community support, with minimal opposition noted, and has been thoroughly vetted for legal compliance.

As the district moves forward, this innovative approach could serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges, showcasing the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and community organizations in addressing critical workforce issues.
