Arkansas schools implement student success plans for grades 8 and above

Arkansas schools are set to enhance student support through the implementation of Student Success Plans, a requirement that began in the 2018-2019 school year. These plans, developed collaboratively by school personnel, parents, and students, aim to address academic needs and provide pathways to graduation, including accelerated learning opportunities and college and career planning.

During a recent Education Committee meeting, officials revealed that 41% of surveyed principals reported that all their students have a Student Success Plan, while 43% indicated that at least 75% of their students are covered. The plans are crafted with input from various stakeholders, including career coaches and instructional facilitators, ensuring a comprehensive approach to student development.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of educator excellence, with the state board tasked with promoting qualified educators across Arkansas public schools. Districts are responsible for recruiting and retaining effective teachers, utilizing programs such as the Teacher Evaluation Support System (TESS) and the LEADS administrator evaluation system.

Additionally, the committee discussed the state's school rating system, which employs a multi-measure approach to assess school performance. This includes indicators such as student achievement, growth, graduation rates, and various quality measures. The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) uses these indicators to assign letter grades to schools, providing transparency and accountability to the public.
