Valley Landfills mechanics strike over dangerous working conditions and safety violations

Concerns over hazardous working conditions at Valley Landfills took center stage during the recent Benton County DSAC meeting, as heavy equipment mechanics voiced alarming safety issues linked to Republic Services. The mechanics, represented by the International Operating Engineers, Local 701, highlighted a range of dangerous conditions, including outdated personal protective equipment (PPE), inadequate decontamination areas, and management's disregard for safety protocols.

One mechanic, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, described the environment as "disastrous," citing multiple complaints filed with OSHA, DEQ, and the EPA that have gone unaddressed due to bureaucratic redirection. "Getting anything addressed up there has been essentially impossible," he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as hazardous conditions persist unchecked.

The mechanics are currently on strike, demanding better safety measures and direct support from their union. They have gathered evidence, including videos and photographs of violations, which they are willing to share with the county board of commissioners. The union has already sent USB drives containing this documentation to local officials.

Among the most pressing concerns raised was the risk of methane gas emissions, with workers being asked to perform potentially dangerous tasks without proper safety measures in place. "They actually have us up there working on equipment, cutting with torches, using welders... without a fire watch," the mechanic warned, underscoring the potential for catastrophic incidents.

While the DSAC acknowledged the gravity of the issues presented, they clarified their limited role in directly addressing the concerns with Republic Services. However, they committed to documenting the mechanics' testimonies to ensure these critical health and safety issues are brought to the attention of the Department of Environmental Quality.

As the situation unfolds, the mechanics remain steadfast in their fight for safer working conditions, calling into question the commitment of both Republic Services and local government agencies to uphold their stated values of employee safety and environmental stewardship.
