The City of Norwalk Harbor Management Commission held a meeting on December 18, 2024, focusing on the recent boating season and future improvements to the harbor facilities. Key discussions included the conclusion of the dock season, which ended on November 30, and the financial outcomes associated with it. Boaters spent a total of 91 nights in Norwalk, generating revenue of $3,497.20 after processing fees.
The commission celebrated the recognition of Norwalk Transient Moorings, which received the Elite Fleet Award for exceptional support to visitors. This accolade was attributed to the collaborative efforts of various local entities, including Norwalk police, marine units, and the Harbor Master’s team, highlighting the community's commitment to enhancing the visitor experience.
Looking ahead, the commission is exploring the installation of floating docks, each measuring 100 square feet or less, to improve access for boaters. Gary Whitmore is leading the initiative to replace some existing docks at another marina, with plans to anchor new facilities south of the visitor dock.
The meeting also addressed the upcoming renewal process for mooring holders. Email reminders will be sent out on January 1, 2025, detailing the necessary documentation for renewal, including liability insurance and registration. An inspection of mooring tackle is scheduled, with an estimated cost of $2,000 for the service, which will cover any necessary replacements.
Additionally, the commission discussed a recent fire incident involving three boats at the South Norfolk Boat Club, expressing gratitude to the fire and police marine units for their prompt response, which contained the fire to the affected vessels.
Overall, the meeting underscored Norwalk's commitment to becoming a premier destination for boaters while ensuring safety and operational efficiency in harbor management.
