Monroe County reports five homicides and increased gun recoveries in February

The Rochester Against Gun Violence Monthly Meeting held on March 1, 2023, highlighted pressing concerns regarding gun violence in the community, with local law enforcement reporting five homicides and 19 shooting victims from 17 different incidents year-to-date. The meeting underscored the ongoing challenges faced by the city as officials discussed the recovery of firearms, including 21 handguns and two long guns in February alone.

Captain Muir provided a detailed account of the arrests related to weapon possession, noting that 30 individuals were arraigned in Monroe County for criminal possession of a weapon. Of these, three were held without bail, while the majority were released under various bail conditions. The statistics revealed a concerning trend, with the youngest individual arrested being just 16 years old.

In response to a previous request, Captain Muir also addressed the tracking of injury levels for nonfatal shootings. He explained that the police reports utilize a computer-generated system with dropdown options to categorize injuries and medical treatment, allowing for a more systematic approach to understanding the impact of gun violence on victims.

The meeting also touched on the need for clearer data presentation, as Councilmember Kathy requested a breakdown of crime gun recoveries separated from non-crime guns in future reports. This request reflects a growing demand for transparency and detailed information to better address the root causes of gun violence in Rochester.
