Rochester Coalition creates data subcommittee to enhance information sharing

The Rochester Against Gun Violence Coalition held its monthly meeting on March 1, 2023, where key discussions centered around community support and data collection efforts aimed at addressing gun violence in the area.

During the meeting, it was reported that the community support team assisted a total of 282 victims in February, with the highest number of victims coming from specific neighborhoods. Notably, the homicide response team provided support to three families, two of whom were affected by February homicides. This data highlights the ongoing challenges the community faces regarding gun violence and the need for continued support services.

A significant topic of discussion was the coalition's commitment to improving data collection and sharing. Members expressed a desire for more detailed information regarding incidents, particularly those occurring on school grounds. In response, the coalition is forming a data subcommittee to create a centralized data portal. This initiative aims to aggregate various data points from different organizations, making it easier for stakeholders to access and analyze information related to gun violence and its impact on the community.

Additionally, the coalition celebrated the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships to local youth during Black History Month, recognizing their contributions and projects. This initiative underscores the coalition's broader goal of empowering the community and fostering positive change among its younger members.

As the coalition moves forward, the focus will remain on enhancing data transparency and support services, with the hope of creating a safer environment for all Rochester residents. The next steps include finalizing the data portal proposal and continuing to engage with community members to address their needs and concerns regarding gun violence.
