Investors commit $26M for new educational facility in Hardeeville

The Southern Lowcountry Regional Board convened on November 26, 2024, to discuss a significant educational project aimed at expanding local capacity for students. The proposed building, spanning approximately 51,000 square feet, is designed to accommodate an additional 850 students, with an estimated 12% expected to come from outside the Lowcountry region.

The total cost of the project is projected at $26 million, which includes $23.5 million for construction and $2.5 million for setup and equipment. Funding commitments have been secured from various sources, including $7.5 million from Guilford County, $1 million from Jasper County, and $13.5 million from the state. Additionally, the city of Hardeeville has awarded a $150,000 grant. However, there remains a funding gap of approximately $1.4 million due to rising construction costs.

Board members expressed urgency in securing the remaining funds, as the state requires full financing before allowing the project to proceed. The timeline for completion is estimated at four years, with the first students expected to graduate from the new program by then. The board emphasized the importance of this initiative in meeting the growing educational needs of the region, particularly in logistics programs, which are crucial given the area's development.
