Utah's outdoor recreation economy analyzed against Western states funding and management practices

The Utah Outdoor Adventure Commission convened on March 20, 2022, to discuss a comprehensive analysis comparing Utah's outdoor recreation metrics with those of ten other Western states. The meeting revealed that about 4% of employment in Utah is directly linked to outdoor recreation, again trailing behind a few neighboring states.

A critical point of the analysis was the breakdown of economic contributions by specific outdoor activities. Snow sports emerged as the leading contributor to Utah's outdoor recreation economy, accounting for roughly 30% of the sector's economic output. Boating, fishing, and RVing followed closely, each contributing about 20%. This distribution underscores the importance of winter sports and motorized recreation in driving economic activity within the state.

The commission also examined the management of outdoor recreation by state agencies, noting that Utah has one of the highest proportions of state-owned land in the West, with 9% managed by state agencies. Additionally, 66% of the land is under federal management, a higher percentage than most other Western states, except for Nevada.

The meeting concluded with recommendations aimed at enhancing the management and funding of outdoor recreation in Utah.
