Lehigh City leaders prepare residents for potential flooding with sandbagging workshop

Lehi City officials are urging residents to prepare for potential flooding this season by learning the proper techniques for filling and placing sandbags. During a recent meeting, Brian Somp, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), provided essential guidance on effective sandbagging practices to help mitigate flood risks.

Somp emphasized the importance of wearing gloves and filling sandbags only halfway to two-thirds full. Overfilling can lead to ineffective barriers and fatigue for volunteers. He demonstrated the correct method of placing sandbags, recommending that they be laid down with the open end facing downstream to prevent water from entering. The bags should be staggered in a brick-like pattern to create a more effective barrier against rising water.

In addition to these techniques, Somp advised that if water levels are expected to rise significantly, residents should start a second row of sandbags behind the first once the height reaches two feet. This layered approach helps maintain stability against the pressure of the water.

Mark Johnson, a city representative, echoed the urgency of the situation, noting the unusually high snowpack in the mountains, which could lead to increased water flow. He called on residents living near flood-prone areas to prepare and consider volunteering to assist neighbors in need.
