Cape Cod announces major infrastructure projects including Route 28 improvements

Cape Cod's infrastructure is set for significant upgrades as the Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) outlined a series of prioritized projects during its recent meeting on January 22, 2023. Key developments include improvements to sidewalks, roadways, and pedestrian facilities across multiple towns, with submissions expected as early as February.

One of the highlighted projects is the Harwich sidewalk improvements along Route 28, which will enhance pedestrian safety with new sidewalks, curb ramps, and crosswalks. A pedestrian bridge will also be constructed to facilitate safe crossing over the area. The project is on track for its 100% design submission this February.

Additionally, the Bass River Bridge Replacement Project has been prioritized for 2024, which includes essential roadwork from Mill Lane in Yarmouth to Uncle Barney's Road in Dennis. This project is also expected to submit its plans in February.

Looking ahead to federal fiscal year 2025, the MPO discussed the Route 28 reconstruction project in Dennis and Harwich, which will involve roadway rehabilitation and the installation of new ADA facilities. The 75% design submission for this project is anticipated in February.

Other notable projects include corridor improvements on Shank Painter Road in Provincetown and resurfacing efforts on Route 6 in Barnstable, both of which aim to enhance safety and accessibility for all users. The Shank Painter Road project is expected to submit its plans by April 2024.

The meeting concluded with a focus on future projects, including intersection improvements in Chatham and further enhancements along Route 28, which will address the need for better bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. These initiatives reflect the MPO's commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and safety across Cape Cod, with ongoing updates expected as projects progress.
