Cape Cod extends free transit for seniors and disabled starting February 1

In a recent meeting of the Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization, held on January 22, 2023, significant initiatives aimed at enhancing public transportation for older adults and individuals with disabilities were announced. Starting February 1, the organization will offer free fixed-route service to all residents aged 60 and over, as well as those with disabilities. This initiative marks a shift from the previous policy, which only provided free fares on Wednesdays. The change is expected to encourage greater use of public transportation among these groups, making it more accessible every day of the week.

Deb, a representative at the meeting, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, highlighting its potential positive impact on the community. “I think it’ll be a good outcome once the seniors and persons with disabilities get onto that fixed route service at a complete discount,” she noted, emphasizing the excitement surrounding this new opportunity for Cape Cod residents.

The meeting also included updates from the Cape Cod Commission, with Steve providing insights into upcoming public meetings and projects. Notably, a public meeting regarding a quarter study will take place on January 29 at the Barnstable Adult Community Center, with recordings to be made available online. Additionally, two meetings related to the Commission's low-lying areas project are scheduled for Mashpee and Harwich in late January and early February.

In a more technical discussion, Steve mentioned the release of a new manual on uniform traffic control devices, the first update in over a decade. This document will bring about changes in road signage and markings, which will be presented in detail at future meetings.

Looking ahead, the organization plans to maintain a consistent meeting schedule, with the next gathering set for February 26. The meeting concluded with a sense of accomplishment, as members expressed gratitude for the productive discussions and the quorum achieved.
